Are YOUR multi-vitamins safe?

You would think all multivitamins are healthy and good for you, right? Well, you might want to do some research- first by reading your multi-vitamin label.  Check out this list of ingredients from the TOP selling brand of multivitamins.  Several of the ingredients are not healthy. In fact, two of the additives are listed as TOP OFFENDERS TO AVOID by Dr. Mercola.  Why would such ddangerous ingredients be in health products? They shouldn't be. There are healthier alternatives to what you see below. Your multivitamins should NOT contain artificial colors, hydrogenated oil, BHT, or talc!!!

   

American Foods (and vitamins) Chockfull of Ingredients Banned in Other Countries

More than 3,000 food additives -- preservatives, flavorings, colors and other ingredients -- are added to foods in the United States.
While each of these substances are legal to use in the US, whether or not they are safe for long-term consumption -- by themselves or in combination -- is a different story altogether. Many have been deemed too harmful to use in other countries.
When you consider that about 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food goes toward processed foods loaded with these additives, it’s no wonder most people are carrying a hefty toxic load that can wreak havoc on their health.
A list of ingredients that are banned across the globe but still allowed for use in America recently made the news. The list is featured in the new book, Rich Food, Poor Food, authored by nutritionist Mira Calton and her husband Jayson.
The banned ingredients include various food dyes, the fat substitute Olestra, brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate (aka brominanted flour), Azodicarbonamide, BHA, BHT, rBGH, rBST, and arsenic.
Seeing that the overall health of Americans is so much lower than other industrialized countries, you can’t help but wonder whether toxic ingredients such as these might play a role in our unhealthy conditions.
Meanwhile, Russia has announced that it plans to extend a ban on U.S. beef, pork and turkey imports coming into effect this month, due to the feed additive ractopamine in the meats. Ractopamine is a growth stimulant banned in several countries, including Russia.

Processed Foods Depend on Additives

When foods are processed, not only are valuable nutrients lost and fibers removed, but the textures and natural variation and flavors are also lost. After processing, what's left behind is a bland, uninteresting "pseudo-food" that most people wouldn’t want to eat.
So at this point, food manufacturers must add back in the nutrients, flavor, color and texture to processed foods in order to make them palatable, and this is why they become loaded with food additives.
Most commonly, additives are included to slow spoilage, prevent fats and oils from going rancid, prevent fruits from turning brown, fortify or enrich the food with synthetic vitamins and minerals to replace the natural ones that were lost during processing, and improve taste, texture and appearance. When reading product packages, here are some of the most common food additives to watch out for:
  • Preservatives: sodium benzoate, sodium nitrite, potassium sorbate, BHA, BHT, TBHQ
  • Sweeteners and artificial sweeteners: fructose, high fructose corn syrup, aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame potassium (acesulfame-K)
  • Artificial colors: FD&C Blue Nos. 1 and 2, FD&C Green No. 3, FD&C Red Nos. 3 and 40, FD&C Yellow Nos. 5 and 6, Orange B, Citrus Red No. 2
  • Artificial flavors
  • Flavor enhancers: monosodium glutamate (MSG), hydrolyzed soy protein, autolyzed yeast extract

Top Offenders to Avoid

According to the Caltons, the following 13 additives are the worst of the more than 150 individual ingredients they investigated during their six-year long journey, which took them through 100 different countries.2

What’s With the Double-Standards?

The food industry has already formulated safer, better products for other countries, in which these and other harmful ingredients are banned. So why do they insist on selling inferior versions in America? For clear examples, take a look at a recent article on 100DaysOfRealFood.com. In it, Vani Hari shows the ingredient labels of several common foods sold in the US and the UK, such as Betty Crocker’s Red Velvet cake mix, McDonald’s French fries, and Pizza Hut’s garlic cheese bread. Amazingly, while these foods can be created using a bare minimum of additives in the UK (and sometimes none), in the US, they’re absolutely LOADED with chemicals.
“The food industry does not want us to pay attention to the ingredients nor do they care about the negative effects from eating them. They certainly don’t care about the astronomical medical bills that are a direct result of us eating the inferior food they are creating,” Vani Hari writes.
“...We as a collective nation must stop this trajectory of sickness and rising health care costs, by understanding the ingredients we are putting into our bodies. We must challenge the U.S. food industry to discontinue the use of banned ingredients that are not allowed elsewhere in the world. We deserve to have the same quality food without potential toxins.”

Russia Issues Long-Term Ban on US Meat

In related “questionable food” news, Russia recently banned US meat supplies after discovering it contains ractopamine—a beta agonist drug that increases protein synthesis, thereby making the animal more muscular. This reduces the fat content of the meat. As reported by Pravda, Russia is the fourth largest importer of US meats, purchasing about $500 million-worth of beef and pork annually.
Effective February 11, Russia will no longer allow US meat imports, stating the ban “is likely to last for a long time.” All meat suppliers wishing to sell their meat and meat products to Russia must certify their meat as ractopamine-free—a condition the US has so far refused to comply with.
The drug is banned for use in 160 countries, including China and Russia, but allowed in 24 countries, including Canada and the United States. While the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) considers ractopamine safe and doesn’t test for it, Russia’s chief health inspector, Gennady Onishchenko, claims there are “serious questions” about the safety of the drug. He previously told the New York Times:
“For instance, use of ractopamine is accompanied by a reduction in body mass, suppression of reproductive function, increase of mastitis in dairy herds, which leads to a steep decline in the quality and safety of milk.”
Ractopamine is also known to affect the human cardiovascular system, and may cause food poisoning, according to Pravda. It’s also thought to be responsible for hyperactivity, muscle breakdown, and can increase death and disability in livestock. While other drugs require a clearance period of around two weeks to help ensure the compounds are flushed from the meat prior to slaughter (and therefore reduce residues leftover for human consumption), there is no clearance period for ractopamine.
In fact, livestock growers intentionally use the drug in the last days before slaughter in order to increase its effectiveness. According to veterinarian Michael W. Fox, as much as 20 percent of ractopamine remains in the meat you buy from the supermarket. Despite potential health risks, the drug is used in 45 percent of US pigs, 30 percent of ration-fed cattle, and an unknown percentage of turkeys.

What’s the Simplest Way to Avoid Harmful Food Additives?

Ditch processed foods entirely. (If you live in Europe you may have more options than Americans, as you may be able to find some processed foods that do not contain any synthetic additives.) About 90 percent of the money Americans spend on food is spent on processed foods, so there is massive room for improvement in this area for most people.
Swapping your processed food diet for one that focuses on fresh whole foods may seem like a radical idea, but it's a necessity if you value your health. And when you put the history of food into perspective, it's actually the processed foods that are "radical" and "new." People have thrived on vegetables, meats, eggs, fruits and other whole foods for centuries, while processed foods were only recently invented.
If you want to eat healthy, I suggest you follow the 1950s (and before) model and spend quality time in the kitchen preparing high-quality meals for yourself and your family. If you rely on processed inexpensive foods, you exchange convenience for long-term health problems and mounting medical bills. The Illness-Wellness Continuum - 

Lose Sickness and Find Wellness has its roots in this theory!

Wellness is a process, never a static state.
Most of us think of wellness in terms of illness; we assume that the absence of illness indicates wellness. There are actually many degrees of wellness, just as there are many degrees of illness. The Illness-Wellness Continuum illustrates the relationship of the treatment paradigm to the wellness paradigm.


Moving from the center to the left shows a progressively worsening state of health. Moving to the right of center indicates increasing levels of health and well being. The treatment paradigm (drugs, herbs, surgery, psychotherapy, acupuncture, and so on) can bring you up to the neutral point, where the symptoms of disease have been alleviated. The wellness paradigm, which can be utilized at any point on the continuum, helps you move toward higher levels of wellness. The wellness paradigm directs you beyond neutral and encourages you to move as far to the right as possible. It is not meant to replace the treatment paradigm on the left side of the continuum, but to work in harmony with it. If you are ill, then treatment is important, but don't stop at the neutral point. Use the wellness paradigm to move toward high-level wellness.

Even though people often lack physical symptoms, they may still be bored, depressed, tense, anxious, or simply unhappy with their lives. Such emotional states often set the stage for physical and mental disease. Even cancer can be brought on by excessive stress that weakens the immune system. Negative emotional states can also lead to abuse of the body through smoking, over drinking alcohol, and overeating - attempts to substitute for other more basic human needs such as acknowledgment and respect, a stimulating and supportive environment, and a sense of purpose and meaning.

Wellness is not a static state. High-level wellness involves giving good care to your physical self, using your mind constructively, expressing your emotions effectively, being creatively involved with those around you, and being concerned about your physical, psychological, and spiritual environments. In fact, it's not so much where you are on the continuum, but which direction you're facing. High-level wellness does not preclude periods of illness and weakness, nor does it attempt to deny that death is a natural part of life.  Awareness of this paradox eventually led us to expand the model, but first a little background.

The Illness-Wellness Continuum was first envisioned by John in 1972, late one evening after everyone else at his office in the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, had gone home. It was a melding of the health risk continuum created by Lewis Robbins (creator of the Health Risk Appraisal) and Abraham Maslow's concept of self-actualization.

Once it was published in 1975, the continuum became an immediate success, an easy way to illustrate what this newly emerging wellness concept was all about. Health practitioners and educators began using it; soon it was appearing in books, journals, and slide presentations everywhere around the world. We naturally included it in the first edition of this book, and we continue to do so because of its visual impact. To this day it is reprinted in health and medical textbooks worldwide.

However, a simple model cannot always convey a complex concept. For a number of years we had recognized that the continuum could be misleading in one very significant area. We knew it is possible to be physically ill yet oriented toward wellness, or to be physically healthy yet functioning from an illness mentality. Our one-dimensional model simply couldn't show this distinction. For example, imagine disabled, sick, or dying people who are taking responsibility for their lives and are consciously engaged in the experience. If only the physical dimension were considered, they would fall on the left side of the continuum, but if emotional, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions are taken into account they would definitely be on the right side of the continuum.

Your Medicines Could Destroy Your Body- Lose Sickness and Find Wellness


People have been conditioned to reach for a drug to solve any and every problem.  This leads to an avalanche of health issues.  The United States of America has the best "acute care" in the world. If you suffer a heart attack or are injured in a car accident, there is no better care in the world.  But, when it comes to chronic care, western medicine is all about treatment via pharmaceuticals.  This should not come as a surprise when you learn that pharmaceutical companies subsidize American medical schools.  So many people fall into the pharmaceutical cycle and don't even know they're being used for profit.  If you have a primary care physician who practices prevention and wellness- keep him/her!!!  Remember the old saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?"  Well, today's medicine isn't even about the cure, it's about the maintenance drugs.  Therefore, an ounce of prevention is worth a TON of cure...so...in my opinion, your focus should be on prevention and wellness.  This is why the blog is named "Lose Sickness and Find Wellness."  Our mantra is "Eat Well, Exercise, and Supplement Intelligently" because those are the three pillars of health in our opinion.  \

It all starts with healthy eating. We eat as many organic fruits and vegetables as possible.  Yes, they cost more. However, we made the decision to lose sickness so that is one of the costs.  We also garden so that we can grow our own food.  This helps with the overall cost and provides us with a great outlet to relieve stress!  We stopped eating red meat 20 years ago. We no longer consume mammals.  There are a number of health and environmental reasons for this but for us, it was the right thing to do. We eat chicken, turkey, and wild caught  fish (never farm raised).  We try to eat organic or free range fowl if possible.  We also try to eat free range eggs. We plan to raise our own chickens within the next 12 months.  We eliminated wheat and sugar from our diets. We do not consume ANY artificial sweeteners at all.  We use a minimal amount of stevia in recipes.  We juice almost every day with collard greens, kale, carrots, celery, cucumbers, red beets, and ginger. Our goal is to make better choices today than we made yesterday!

Every day, you have a choice...you can fall into the profit trap of the big pharmaceutical companies and follow the path of sickness or you can make a decision to lose sickness and find a wellness path.  There is a lot of good information available if you look.  It takes a little more time and some people may tease you for being different (this is the root of all bullying) but it's worth it.  We raised our children naturally and yes, they were a bit different.  At 20 and 18, they are now extremely healthy young adults.  They are both at college and in their own ways, they are helping their friends and fraternity brothers to lose sickness and find wellness.

Turmeric Compound Reduces Post-Bypass Heart Attack Risk 56%

A remarkable study performed at Chiang Mai University, Thailand and published in the American Journal of Cardiology last July, found that the administration of curcuminoids, natural phenols within the spice turmeric, reduced the frequency of myocardial infarction (heart attack) after coronary artery bypass in a group of 121 patients randomly selected to receive a placebo or 4 grams a day beginning 3 days before the scheduled surgery and continued until 5 days after surgery.[i]

According to the study, "it is well established that myocardial infarction (MI) associated with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) predicts a poor outcome. Nevertheless, cardioprotective therapies to limit myocardial injury after CABG are lacking." The researchers hypothesized that since preclinical research shows curcuminoids decrease proinflammatory cytokines during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery and decrease the occurrence of cardiac cell death, they may provide a much-needed therapy.

The primary end point was the incidence of in-hospital myocardial infarction, which was found to be decreased from 30.0% in the placebo group to 13.1% in the curcuminoid group --  a 56% relative risk reduction.

The secondary end point was the effect of curcuminoids on C-reactive protein, plasma maondialdehyde, and N-terminal pro-B-type naturietic peptide levels, all of which were lower after treatment.

The study authors concluded: "we demonstrated that curcuminoids significantly decreased MI associated with CABG. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of curcuminoids may account for their cardioprotective effects shown in this study."

Curcumin is one of the world's most thoroughly studied and characterized phytocompounds, with thousands of studies published in peer-reviewed biomedical journals, and dozens of researched applications to cardiovascular health.  There are 34 studies on our database indicating curcumin's cardioprotective properties, 55 studies on its ability to down-regulate the Cox-2 enzyme, which is associated with inflammatory processes directly linked to the underlying causes of cardiovascular disease, and 205 studies indicating its antioxidant properties, which may confer protection against oxidative stress within the cardiovascular system.

Commentary:
