The National Institutes of Health writes that magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and it is essential for good health. About 50 percent of total body magnesium is found in bone. The other 50 percent is found predominantly inside cells of body tissues and organs. Although only 1% of magnesium is found in blood, the body works very hard to keep blood levels of magnesium at a constant level. Science Daily has reported on May 5, 2013,  

Parents are typically advised to make certain their children drink milk and eat other calcium-rich foods in order to build strong bones. However, they also may be encouraged to make certain their kids eat salmon, almonds and other foods which are high in magnesium. Although it has been known that magnesium is important for bone health in adults, few studies have looked at whether magnesium intake and absorption are related to bone mineral content in young children. A new study has addressed the issue of the importance of magnesium for bone health in kids. The levels of calcium and magnesium in the children in this study were measured. The results showed that the amounts of magnesium consumed and absorbed were key predictors of how much bone children had. Dr. Abrams concluded, "We believe it is important for children to have a balanced, healthy diet with good sources of minerals, including both calcium and magnesium."
