Grape Seed Extract Superior To Blockbuster Diabetes Drug, Preclinical Study Finds

A new study published in the Journal of Cell Communication and Signaling compared the effects of a grape seed extract (GSP) to the diabetes drug metformin (MET) in rats fed a high fat, high fructose diet (HFFD) designed to provoke insulin resistance.

Titled, "Grape seed proanthocyanidins and metformin act by different mechanisms to promote insulin signaling in rats fed high calorie diet," Indian researchers discovered that both substances reduced elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and elevated blood insulin (hyperinsulinemia), while improving the following diet-altered parameters: glycolysis, tyrosine phosphorylation of IR-β and IRS-1, IRS-1-PI3K association and Akt activation.

Furthermore, adverse changes induced by the HFFD, such as the activation of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, leptin and suppression of cytokine signaling-3 and reduction in adiponectin, were reversed by GSP more effectively than by MET.

Proanthocyanidins are a type of secondary plant metabolites known as flavonoids found in many plants, but are particularly concentrated in cocoa beans, cinnamon, grape seeds and skin, and maritime pine bark (pycnogenol). Proanthrocyanidins are known primarily through their antioxidant properties, but the GreenMedInfo.com research project has identified at least 20 beneficial physiological actions to this phytochemical class relevant to at least 50 disease states.

Metformin, on the other hand, is an oral antidiabetic drug in the biguanide class, and is used as the first-line drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The original inspiration for the biguanide class was the discovery, in the 1920s, of guanidine compounds within the herb French lilac (Galega officinalis), long used to treat diabetes in traditional medicine. Metformin, however, is an entirely synthetic compound, whose exact mechanisms of action are unknown. What is known is that like other antidiabetic drugs (e.g. Avandia) metformin is cardiotoxic and has been linked to increased cardiac mortality in a number of studies. Proanthrocyanidins, and grape seed extract in particular, have been extensively researched to have protective and therapeutic properties on the cardiovascular system.

Clearly, the weight of evidence suggests that grape seed proanthrocyanins hold great promise as a metformin alternative and/or anti-diabetic agent. Unfortunately, the law forbids the medicinal use of natural substances, and lacking the $800 million plus required on average to fund the clinical trials necessary to file for FDA drug approval, health consumers are left almost entirely without guidance from conventional medical practitioners who lose their FDA-underwritten liability shield when they deviate from the drug-based standard of care.

Pycnogenol® May Improve Symptoms of Asthma

Daily supplements of the French maritime pine bark extract Pycnogenol® may improve symptoms of asthma, according to the results of a recent clinical trial.

While not recommending that patients abandon their inhalers, Italian researchers report that daily supplements of the pine bark extract may help asthma patients reduce inhaler dosage and sleep awakenings.
"The outcome (of the study) does indeed point to the possibility to allow asthmatic patients to moderately reduce their daily inhaled fluticasone dose," wrote Dr. Gianni Belcaro, the study's lead researcher. Asthmatic patients are reminded that they should always have access to their inhaler.

Writing in Panminerva Medica, researchers from the University of Pescara, Italy, report that daily supplementation with Pycnogenol allowed for lowering the daily required inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) dosage in 55% of participants.

Only six percent of people in the study control group were able to control their asthma with a lower steroid dosage while 19% had to switch to a higher regimen to control their asthma.

"This study gives promising news to asthma patients seeking natural ways to complement their medication in order to better control their asthma symptoms, and confirms that Pycnogenol offers a natural solution that is not only effective but also safe," said Dr. Belcaro.

Pycnogenol—a combination of procyanidins, bioflavonoids and organic acids extracted from the bark of the maritime pine—has been the subject of scores of clinical trials.

The new study involved 76 people with mild to moderate allergic asthma. The participants were randomly divided into one of two groups: The first group received 100 mg of Pycnogenol per day in addition to sustaining their use of ICS, while the other group continued their use of ICS without additional supplementation.

After six months of intervention, the researchers observed that the use of a salbutamol rescue inhaler was required, on average, every fifth day in the Pycnogenol group, whereas such inhalers were required, on average, every second day in the control group.

In addition, the pine bark group reported fewer night awakenings caused by asthma symptoms—only half the frequency as before—while no significant change was found for the control group, said the researchers.
"The decrease of typical asthma symptoms with coughing, wheezing, dyspnea and nighttime awakenings suggests that Pycnogenol may contribute to improving quality of life of patients suffering from asthma," wrote Dr. Belcaro and his co-workers.

"Further studies are warranted to corroborate the benefits in a larger population, which may be necessary to create sufficient awareness and confidence in the medical community of the adjuvant virtues of Pycnogenol."

What is it?

Pycnogenol is a natural plant product made from the bark of the European coastal pine, Pinus Maritima. It is the most powerful antioxidant today and acts as a protector against environmental toxins.
Research has demonstrated that Pycnogenol is 50 times more effective than vitamin E and 20 times more powerful than vitamin C. Studies show that Pycnogenol is rapidly absorbed and distributed throughout the body within twenty minutes. Pycnogenol also activates vitamin C and puts it to work before it leaves your body.

How does it work?
