The Sexy Seven For Optimal Health

A while back, I wrote about the importance of the "SEXY SEVEN" for optimal health.  The sexy seven are seven (obviously) important supplements that people should consume for optimal health.  Now, I know there is always at least one person who says, "If you eat a perfect diet, you don't need supplements"  and my response is "Name a person who eats a perfect diet." I mean, look to the person on your left and look to the person on your right- statistically speaking, one of the three of you is obese.   

Produce grown in this country is almost all grown on factory farms where the emphasis is on producing beautiful and physically attractive produce and not nutrient dense produce.  Numerous studies show the nutrients in foods are significantly lower today than in years past.  So, supplementing isn't just for the health nuts or lunatic fringe type people.  Even the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that adults should take a multivitamin (“Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone…it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements.”- JAMA, June 19, 2002, Vol 287, No 23, 3127-3129).

Grape Seed Extract Superior To Blockbuster Diabetes Drug, Preclinical Study Finds

A new study published in the Journal of Cell Communication and Signaling compared the effects of a grape seed extract (GSP) to the diabetes drug metformin (MET) in rats fed a high fat, high fructose diet (HFFD) designed to provoke insulin resistance.

Titled, "Grape seed proanthocyanidins and metformin act by different mechanisms to promote insulin signaling in rats fed high calorie diet," Indian researchers discovered that both substances reduced elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and elevated blood insulin (hyperinsulinemia), while improving the following diet-altered parameters: glycolysis, tyrosine phosphorylation of IR-β and IRS-1, IRS-1-PI3K association and Akt activation.

Furthermore, adverse changes induced by the HFFD, such as the activation of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, leptin and suppression of cytokine signaling-3 and reduction in adiponectin, were reversed by GSP more effectively than by MET.

Proanthocyanidins are a type of secondary plant metabolites known as flavonoids found in many plants, but are particularly concentrated in cocoa beans, cinnamon, grape seeds and skin, and maritime pine bark (pycnogenol). Proanthrocyanidins are known primarily through their antioxidant properties, but the GreenMedInfo.com research project has identified at least 20 beneficial physiological actions to this phytochemical class relevant to at least 50 disease states.

Metformin, on the other hand, is an oral antidiabetic drug in the biguanide class, and is used as the first-line drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The original inspiration for the biguanide class was the discovery, in the 1920s, of guanidine compounds within the herb French lilac (Galega officinalis), long used to treat diabetes in traditional medicine. Metformin, however, is an entirely synthetic compound, whose exact mechanisms of action are unknown. What is known is that like other antidiabetic drugs (e.g. Avandia) metformin is cardiotoxic and has been linked to increased cardiac mortality in a number of studies. Proanthrocyanidins, and grape seed extract in particular, have been extensively researched to have protective and therapeutic properties on the cardiovascular system.

Clearly, the weight of evidence suggests that grape seed proanthrocyanins hold great promise as a metformin alternative and/or anti-diabetic agent. Unfortunately, the law forbids the medicinal use of natural substances, and lacking the $800 million plus required on average to fund the clinical trials necessary to file for FDA drug approval, health consumers are left almost entirely without guidance from conventional medical practitioners who lose their FDA-underwritten liability shield when they deviate from the drug-based standard of care.

Migraine May Change Structure of Brain

• This meta-analysis of migraineurs showed an association between white matter abnormalities and migraine with aura but not for migraine without aura.
• An association of infarct-like lesions was greater for migraine with aura than for migraine without aura, but no significant association was found for migraine with or without aura when compared with controls.

Migraine was linked to structural brain changes, particularly in the presence of aura, a meta-analysis showed.
White matter brain lesions appeared 68% more often in migraineurs with aura than in those without migraine; a trend for 34% elevated risk of white matter in migraine patients without aura didn't reach significance, Messoud Ashina, MD, PhD, of the Danish Headache Center at Glostrup Hospital in Copenhagen, and colleagues found.
Clinically-silent infarct-like abnormalities and brain volume changes also correlated with migraine, they reported online in Neurology.
However, it's still not clear how these changes arise or whether they have any clinical significance, the group cautioned. "Traditionally, migraine has been considered a benign disorder without long-term consequences for the brain," they noted.
MRI imaging to exclude secondary causes of headache often turns up such abnormalities that worry both neurologists and patients, the group noted.
"Patients with white matter abnormalities can be reassured," they recommended. "Patients with infarct-like lesions should be evaluated for stroke risk factors. Volumetric MRI remains a research tool."
Eli Feen, MD, a neurologist at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, agreed with the researchers on evaluating stroke risk factors in patients with infarct-like brain lesions on MRI. But he suggested it should be done regardless of migraine status, and instead be based on age and the prevalence of stroke.
"What is reassuring is that when we look at the brain MRI of a migraine patient, we don't have to be concerned about the lesions or abnormalities of the white matter suggesting something more malignant," he said in an interview.
Without knowing the true clinical significance of the findings, clinicians should focus on making sure that migraine is taken seriously and treated properly, commented Emily Rubenstein Engel, MD, associate director of the Dalessio Headache Center at Scripps Clinic in San Diego.
"It is a disease that can -- and should -- be managed well, so that patients are minimally symptomatic and have minimal injury to their brain," she said in an email to MedPage Today.
But while there's growing evidence that migraineurs are at slightly elevated stroke risk overall, there's no evidence that preventing migraine reduces that risk, argued Andrew Charles, MD, director of the headache research and treatment program at the University of California Los Angeles.
"Patients with migraine, particularly those with aura along with their migraine attacks, should work to reduce other stroke risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking," he suggested in an email to MedPage Today.
The meta-analysis included six population-based studies and 13 clinic-based studies that looked for MRI abnormalities in migraineurs from 1989 through 2013.
The prevalence of white matter abnormalities ranged from 4% to 59% across the studies.
Pooled analysis of the four that reported on this measure indicated an odds ratio of 1.68 for migraine with aura compared with no-migraine controls (95% CI 1.07-2.65).
The odds of white matter lesions was 1.34 for migraine without aura but missed statistical significance (95% CI 0.96-1.87).
One of the studies, CAMERA-2, suggested no link between white matter abnormality progression and anti-migraine therapy; another indicated no increased risk of stroke, heart attack, or cardiovascular death with triptan medication.
"While this result is reassuring, robust conclusions are limited due to confounding by indication," Ashina's group cautioned.
For silent infarct-like lesions, the likelihood across two pooled studies was 44% higher for migraineurs with aura than without aura (P=0.04), but no statistically significant association emerged for either compared with controls.
"It is unclear whether silent infarct-like lesions predispose to or are associated with development of clinical stroke," the researchers pointed out.
Also, whereas infarct-like lesions are associated with cognitive decline and dementia in the elderly, CAMERA-2 and another study didn't show a link to cognitive decline in migraine and other severe types of headache, they added.
Theories are that these lesions could represent a combination of episodic focal brain under-perfusion or a manifestation of hypertensive small-vessel disease.
Of the nine studies that looked at brain volume, seven indicated reduced grey matter density in brain regions in migraineurs compared with controls. Another study indicated increased grey matter density in the periaqueductal gray (a region involved in pain processing) and the dorsolateral pons regions only in migraine with aura.
"Additional longitudinal studies are needed to determine the differential influence of migraine without and with aura, to better characterize the effects of attack frequency and to assess longitudinal changes in brain structure and function," the group concluded.
Limitations included heterogeneity in patient samples, selection criteria, headache characteristics, test methodology, timing, and data interpretation, as well as the possibility of residual or unmeasured confounding and unclear directionality of associations.

Grape Seed Extract May Beat Chemo in Late-Stage Cancer

The benefits of grape seed extract in cancer are well documented, but modern medicine won't do anything with it until the mechanism of action has been found, so that it can be isolated, purified, made poisonous and owned by a single company for enormous profits.

The more advanced cancer is, the less effective chemotherapy is. However, a new study has shown that grape seed extract has exactly the opposite quality: The more advanced the cancer, the less extract that's needed to kill it. On top of that, the study also shows that grape seed extract targets the cancer cells that become most resistant to chemotherapy.

In the face of this remarkable new development, it's likely that grape seed extract is more effective in treating late-stage cancer than modern medicine's chemotherapy. Not only does it take less and less of the substance to kill cancer cells, it's able to target the cells that have become drug resistant, thus making chemo useless!

Yet again, the common misperception that modern medicine's treatments are stronger or more potent or better in any way is shown to be mistaken. Sadly, it's a mistake that can kill.

Grape Seed Extract Exposes Modern Medicine's Failings

The study in question was produced in the University of Colorado Cancer Center and published in the journal Cancer Letters. It was an in vitro study, not in vivo. That is, no living creatures were involved. The study was performed on cell cultures. That might make it seem relatively insignificant. However, much prior research has already documented grape seed extract's ability to control and kill cancer, so that's not in much doubt. What this study discovered is a plausible means by which it happens. This is the kind of information that modern medicine craves.

Have you ever noticed how there's so much focus on the idea that cholesterol causes heart disease? It doesn't, but that doesn't deter the ongoing research that assumes it to be true. That's because modern medicine demands to know how something works—or at least to be given an explanation, whether true or not. There's an assumption that, if you know that A is associated with B, then controlling A will prevent or cure B. It doesn't seem to matter if it's true, only that it sounds plausible.

The "Plausible" Mode of Action

Rather than focusing on what really counts—survival and return to health—medicine focuses on markers that are based on plausible modes of action.

Once a "plausible" mode of action idea has caught on, research funds get directed towards it. A search goes on to find ways to control that presumed connection. That's why we have statins. They're associated with heart disease. They don't cause it, but a seemingly plausible theory was produced saying that cholesterol causes heart disease. Therefore, since statins can reduce cholesterol, they're the first thing a doctor prescribes when someone has any sort of heart disease sign—even just being past the age of 40 or 50.

Statins don't produce health. In fact, they destroy it, causing memory loss, muscle damage, and death. But they're a perfect example of a plausible idea getting research funding, drugs being developed to cause a change in a marker, doctors prescribing it, and enormous profits getting funneled to Big Pharma.

Ultimately, does it matter whether a treatment can meet some arbitrary marker, or is it more important that it heals you? The answer should be obvious—and it is to everyone but a medical system that's gone awry. Modern medicine wants a product that's owned by Big Pharma because that apparently means it's science-based. That it invariably costs an exorbitant amount and doesn't cure isn't of concern. All that matters is that arbitrary markers be met.
Therefore, while it's interesting to learn something about how a treatment works, let's get on with it. Let's focus on the fact that grape seed extract does work and inform people so they can take advantage of it.
