nutraMetrix® Isotonix® Champion Blend Plus

Learn more about Carmelo Anthony's Champion Blend (click here)

Primary Benefits of nutraMetrix® Isotonix® Champion Blend Plus *:

  • Promotes healthy muscle growth and muscle retention
  • Helps reduce muscle fatigue
  • Supports bone health
  • Provides antioxidant protection to minimize the effects of free radicals
  • Contains activated forms of select B vitamins to ensure optimal utilization by the body
  • Increases energy
  • Promotes cardiovascular health
  • Promotes optimal immune functions

Key Ingredients Found in nutraMetrix® Isotonix® Champion Blend Plus

Pycnogenol® (25 mg)
Pycnogenol is a natural plant extract from the bark of the maritime pine tree, which grows exclusively along the coast of southwest France in Les Landes de Gascogne. This unspoiled and natural forest environment is the unique source of pine bark. Pycnogenol is one of the most researched ingredients in the natural product marketplace. Published findings have demonstrated Pycnogenol’s wide array of support to the body. Pine bark extract is an all-natural combination of procyanidins, bioflavonoids and organic acids. The extract has three basic properties — it is a powerful antioxidant, selectively binds to collagen and elastin, and promotes the normal production of endothelial nitric oxide, which promotes the normal dilation of blood vessels. As one of the most powerful natural scavengers of free radicals, Pycnogenol combats free radicals before they cause oxidative stress to vital organs. Its super-antioxidant capabilities promote cardiovascular health*

Instantized Branch Chain Amino Acids (IBCAAs) (3 g)
Branched chain amino acids (BCAA) are considered essential, as they cannot be synthesized by the human body and, therefore, must be consumed through diet or supplementation. Unlike other amino acids, BCAA are used primarily by skeletal muscle, making up 30-35 percent of the muscle tissue itself. These amino acids promote healthy muscle growth and retention. As aging occurs, the body’s ability to build and retain muscle tissue or size is reduced, which can result in weakness and frailty. Research has shown that supplementation with BCAA promotes muscle retention in older adults. Additionally, it has been shown that supplementation of BCAA during exercise supports muscle protein synthesis and inhibits protein catabolism (breakdown) and muscle fatigue. By using instantized BCAAs within the isotonic system, there is a quicker dissolution and increased bioavailability.*

Activated B Vitamins (Folinic Acid, Methylcobalamin and Pyridoxal 5’ Phosphate)
B vitamins support numerous metabolic processes in the body. This formula contains the activated forms of select B vitamins to promote optimal use by the body. By using these advanced forms, the body has to work less for utilization and effectiveness is increased. Folinic acid, methylcobalamin (B12) and pyridoxal 5’ phosphate (B6) are known to promote cardiovascular health. Additional B vitamins such as B1, B5, niacin and biotin support many processes allowing this product to work via several mechanisms to increase energy, promote cardiovascular health, decrease stress and improve mood while helping to maintain normal serotonin levels.*

Vitamin C (60 mg)
Vitamin C is a multi-faceted nutrient primarily known for its antioxidant benefits and strong role in immune health. Vitamin C helps support cardiovascular health in a few different ways. Vitamin C protects against LDL peroxidation by scavenging free radicals.*

Vitamin D3 (400 IU)
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in some foods and endogenously produced when sunlight strikes the skin and activates vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D promotes the efficient intestinal absorption of calcium, by supporting the synthesis of calcium-binding proteins to promote normal calcium absorption and retention. Vitamin D also promotes the normal formation of bone and normal bone growth, and bone remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by factors such as lack of exposure to sunlight, reduced skin synthesis of vitamin D, lower dietary intake, impaired intestinal absorption, and reduced metabolism to active forms of vitamin D by the kidneys, all of which increase with aging. Deficiency has been linked to numerous health concerns and insufficient levels of this vitamin are associated with weak bones and muscle weakness. In addition to promoting strong bones, vitamin D also has other roles in health, including supporting the body’s immune function. Vitamin D has been shown to support normal immune-modulation, and it is thought that supplementation promotes immune health by promoting the body’s normal regulation of T-cell function. *

Frequently Asked Questions about nutraMetrix® Isotonix® Champion Blend Plus

Should this product be taken on an empty stomach?
Yes. Maximum absorption occurs when taken on an empty stomach.

I am healthy and athletic. Why should I take nutraMetrix Isotonix Champion Blend Plus?
Everyone is vulnerable to the aging process caused by continuous free radicals damage. Athletes tend to be exposed to elevated levels of oxidative stress. Free radicals develop as byproducts during metabolism when calories are processed with oxygen. Athletes inhale 10 to 20 times more oxygen during physical activity over rest periods. The increase in activity creates additional free radicals. In fact, these free radicals are known to limit performance, as free radicals appear to take their toll on muscle tissue. Not only does Isotonix Champion Blend Plus help defend your body against free radicals damage thanks to Pycnogenol, but the inclusion of Instantized Branch Chain Amino Acids can help reduce muscle fatigue, allowing for better workouts.*

What does “Activated” refer to in reference to B-vitamins?
Activated refers to the active forms of vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid. Using forms other than these activated forms requires that the vitamins be enzymatically activated prior to utilization by the body. Not only does this take time and energy within the body, there are circumstances in which this reaction is either slowed or inhibited.*

Diabetes control requires the proper nutrients

Courtesy of Natural News
Wednesday, October 24, 2012
by: Derrell Jones

Disturbingly, diabetes kills more people in America than breast cancer and AIDS combined. The World Health Organization anticipates that by 2030, over 360 million people will have diabetes. If you wish to avoid diabetes or you currently have diabetes and wish to slow or stop its progression, then proper nutrient support is imperative. The nutrients and what foods to find them in are emphasized below.

The powerful usual suspects

B Vitamin Complex: B Vitamins are extremely important especially to diabetics but two are of particular help. Daily intake of vitamin B6 can reduce the need for insulin. Dr. John Ellis, M.D. found that a normal blood sugar level was regained when 100 mg of B6 was taken daily. Biotin, another vitamin in the complex, works with insulin in assisting the body in the utilization of glucose. Biotin is also instrumental in preventing or reversing peripheral neuropathy in diabetics. A person can find these in foods such as turkey, dark meat chicken, beef and chicken livers, mushrooms, oats, and avocado to name a few.

Vitamin C:
Diabetics tend to be susceptible to infections. Vitamin C's antioxidant powers can help combat that. Also, vitamin C helps the body to form collagen which is important for vascular health delaying or preventing vascular complications. Deficiencies have led to a decreased production of insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Vitamin C can be found in foods such as broccoli, spinach, cabbage, mangoes, asparagus, cantaloupe, and citrus fruits for example.

Vitamin E: Frequently, diabetics suffer from damage to their eyes and kidneys. Vitamin E assists in preventing this damage because it is a powerful anticoagulant which reduces stress to the vascular regions of these vital organs/organelles. The following are foods which contain vitamin E: Spinach, almonds, peanuts, broccoli, mangoes, kiwi fruit and tomatoes.

Magnesium and Potassium: When the body is deficient in these two nutrients, glucose intolerance is likely. This leads to organ and nerve damage. Magnesium serves as a supporter and protector of the cardiovascular system. It helps to widen blood vessels and also reduces circulating cholesterol in the bloodstream. Potassium deficiencies can occur from the insulin support given to diabetics. Ironically, lowered potassium levels lead to poor insulin sensitivity, responsiveness and secretion exacerbating diabetic complications. You can find magnesium in nuts, seeds, whole unrefined grains, and green vegetables like spinach. Potassium can be found in bananas, apricots, dates, chicken, fish, turkey and so on.

Important but lesser known nutrients

Chromium: Whenever glucose or insulin enters the bloodstream, chromium goes right to work unless the body's reserves are low. Chromium deficiency in the average western diet means the body cannot replenish what is lost during the ordinary course of business. Add to that the fact that refined sugars strip the body of chromium adverse health conditions like diabetes is more likely. Chromium helps to normalize blood glucose levels and decreases insulin resistance. It can be found in many foods like beef liver, whole wheat or rye bread, chicken, potatoes and eggs just to name a few.

Alpha-Lipoic acid: Alpha-lipoic acid has been demonstrated to help increase the use of glucose by cells and lower insulin resistance. In fact, alpha-lipoic acid has proven to be so effective for diabetes treatment that it has been prescribed by German doctors for the last 30 years.

There are additional nutrients that are of great benefit to diabetics such as vanadium, zinc, coenzyme Q10 and essential fatty acids. Speak to a trusted healthcare provider to help create a plan that will optimize your health through proper nutrient intake.

Commentary

Although supplements are important, Orlampa Enterprises always states that a person must "eat well, exercise, and supplement intelligently."  By eating well, a person with diabetes MUST eat well. We strongly suggest that someone with diabetes understand the glycemic index of foods.  The glycemic index (or GI) measures how fast and how high blood sugar levels rise after consuming foods that contain carbohydrates. White bread, for example, is a high glycemic index food and is converted almost immediately to glucose, causing blood sugar levels to spike rapidly and potentially triggering the body to store some of the calories as fat.

Different types of carbohydrates are processed differently by the body and, consequently, have different effects on blood glucose levels. The glycemic index ranks carbohydrate-rich foods according to their effect on blood glucose levels. The best sources of carbohydrates – fruits, vegetables and whole grains – deliver essential vitamins and minerals, fiber and a host of important phytonutrients, all while having minimal impact on blood sugar.

As stated above, exercise is also a key component to obtaining optimal health.  Would you be interested in learning about a low glycemic lifestyle?  Click here.  Orlampa Enterprises helps individuals (and groups) find their fit!

Research finds Vitamin C, beta-carotene link to Alzheimer’s

Research finds Vitamin C, beta-carotene link to Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most feared and devastating diseases that all generations face as they age. Researchers have been unable to pinpoint a cause for Alzheimer’s disease but often attribute it to a combination of genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time. There has been so much speculation as to what causes Alzheimer’s disease, however, it is still not yet fully understood.
Recent research has revealed that lower concentrations of vitamin C and beta-carotene in the blood may heighten the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in person’s aged 65 to 90 years of age. A study by Professor Gabriele Nagel and Neurologist Professor Christine von Arnim found that these two nutrients were lacking in certain patients who took part in the study:
Antioxidants may prevent the onset [of] Alzheimer’s disease as high dietary intake of vitamin C and E were reported to be associated with lower risk of the disease. We found that blood vitamin C and B-carotene concentrations were significantly lower in demented than in control persons even after adjusting for school education, intake of dietary supplements, smoking habits, body mass index, and alcohol consumption.
Only 5% of the time is Alzheimer’s Disease caused by specific genetic changes that guarantee debilitation. You can begin to reduce your risk of developing this disease with a healthy diet and increasing your vitamin C and beta-carotene antioxidant intakes. Adding these supplements to your daily diet might lower your risk of developing the disease later in life.

Why we should protect our cells

Why we should protect our cells

Published: Tuesday | September 25, 2012
By:  Dr Tony Vendryes (Courtesy of The Gleaner)

LAST WEEK, I wrote about a concept called cellular nutrition and the importance of providing the cells of the body with the right nutrients.
Today, I will expand on that theme and discuss the need to also protect the cells.
The trillions of cells in the human body work very hard. Consider, for example, the human heart. On average, it beats over three billion times in a lifetime, pumping millions of quarts of blood through some 70,000 miles of blood vessels all over the body. The muscle cells of your heart, the cells in your blood, as well as the cells that make the blood vessels themselves, are constantly subject to stress and strain, wear and tear. Little wonder that heart disease, blood disorders and circulation problems are so common.
Or what about your liver, that often undervalued organ? As the major organ of detoxification in the body, on a moment-to-moment basis, it conducts thousands of chemical processes to neutralise harmful substances and then pass them out of the body in the form of bile. The liver cells need protection from damage, just like the cells in all the other organs and tissues.

Free radicals
A major cause of cellular damage comes from free radicals. These are unstable chemicals that, in excess, can harm the cells and promote disease. They are produced by the body itself, as metabolic by-products, similar to how a car engine produces exhaust fumes. Free radicals also come from pollution in the environment, some drugs, cigarette smoke, and even the electromagnetic radiation from appliances and even from the sun itself. Free radicals can damage all parts of the cells, including your genes and DNA. This can lead to cancer. In fact, free radical damage is the underlying cause of most disease processes as well as reason why our bodies age.
There are special substances called antioxidants that defend and protect your cells from being damaged by these free radicals. The cells themselves manufacture antioxidant substances with fancy names like 'catalase' and 'superoxide dismutase'. However, if too many free radicals are produced, or if too little antioxidants are available, disease will result. We all need additional supplies of antioxidants.
A diet rich in antioxidants is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and fresh fruit and vegetables are the main dietary sources of antioxidants, the more you eat, the better. I call these antioxidants 'The ACES' and they are absolutely necessary for optimal health.

The ACES

A - Vitamin A: This is a powerful antioxidant which helps to protect the cells from cancer and other illnesses. It is commonly found in yellow, green and orange fruits including carrots, pumpkin, callaloo, papaya, mangoes, and also in liver and fish liver oils. The plant sources also contain other substances called carotenoids (e.g. beta carotene), which the body converts to vitamin A.

C - Vitamin C: Man is one of very few animals that cannot manufacture his own vitamin C. This essential antioxidant has to be obtained from the diet. It protects against pollution, cancer and infections and is also necessary for tissue growth and cell repair. Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as citrus, berries and greens are good sources. This vitamin is greatly depleted by alcohol, many prescription medications, and by smoking.

E - Vitamin E: This is yet another powerful antioxidant, which not only protects against cancer, but also improves heart and circulatory function. It promotes healing, reduces blood pressure and prevents abnormal clotting of the blood. Vitamin E is found in cold pressed vegetable oils, dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and grains.

S - Selenium: This mineral is a vital antioxidant, especially when combined with vitamin E, it protects the immune system from free radicals and inhibits the formation of tumours. Recent research indicates that selenium provides powerful protection from viruses, including the AIDS virus! Selenium, although needed in only small amounts, is important for the proper functioning of the heart, liver, pancreas and prostate. It is found in Brazil nuts, grains, yeast, broccoli, and some meats.
Unfortunately, the modern Western diet is deficient in the ACES and daily supplementation to ensure adequate antioxidant protection is necessary.

Herbal antioxidant
Several herbs also act as powerful antioxidants. Green tea (referred to last week) is full of antioxidant substances called polyphenols, which scientist believe are protective against cancer. The Chinese herb schizandra contains antioxidants called schizandrins, while the well-known Jamaican herb rosemary is endowed with potent antioxidants known as rosemanols. Pycnogenol, obtained from the bark of the French Marine pine tree as well as from the skin and seeds of red grapes, is an antioxidant that is particularly protective of the blood vessels.

Curcumin, vitamin C fight fluoride-induced renal injury

By Jimmy Downs
Sunday Sept 30, 2012 via foodconsumer.org

Fluoride damages the brain and kidneys among other things.  But you don't have to be a victim.   A new study in Biological Trace Element Research suggests that taking vitamin C or curcumin supplements can help reduce kidney injury induced by fluoride, which is added in drinking water in the U.S. (added comment: and also made available at most dentists' offices)

The study led by Nabavi SF of National Elites Foundation of Iran in Tehran, Iran and colleagues showed that daily exposure to drinking water with 600 ppm sodium fluoride for as short as one week caused renal injury in rats.

The study also showed that intraperitoneal administration of curcumin at a dose of 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight one week prior to the fluoride treatment significantly reduced the oxidative stress and the toxicity of fluoride.

For the study, one week after the treatments with fluoride and curcumin, the researchers measured "lipid peroxidation level, activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and level of glutathione in kidney homogenate" and also creatinine, serum urea and blood urea nitrogen levels in blood samples.

Another group of rats received vitamin C at a dose of 10 mg/kg as standard antioxidant.

Both curcumin and vitamin C treatments prior to fluoride treatment normalized the levels of serum creatinine, serum urea, and blood urea nitrogen.   And they also prevented the antioxidant enzyme from decreasing and kept lipid peroxidation levels balanced.

The researchers concluded "curcumin treatment at the doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg (intraperitoneally) showed significant nephroprotective effects."

In another study released in Renal Failure, the researchers also found a similar profective effect from quercetin supplements at a dose of 20 mg/kg.

Still another study published in Pharmaceutical Biology showed that administration of lycopene at a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight per day provided similar benefits. This study was conducted by Heba H. Mansour of the National Centre for Radiation Research and Technology (NCRRT), Atomic Energy Authority in Cairo, Egypt and colleagues.

Both curcumin and vitamin C supplements are critically important for preventing damages from toxic chemicals like fluoride and radiation from nuclear disasters and medical diagnostics and treatment.

Food consumers who want fluoride out of their drinking water may use a reverse osmosis water filter. Ordinary water filters can't get rid of fluoride.  Another type of water filter that can be used for the same purpose is based on aluminum nanomaterial, which is less desirable to some consumers because of the filtering material used.

Fighting cancer starts with what’s on your plate

A great article written by Dr. Cory Couillard

Cancer affects everyone – the young and old, the rich and poor and most importantly, it does not discriminate gender or race. We are all in the fight against cancer together.  Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 7.6 million deaths annually according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It’s been said that 30 percent of cancer deaths are caused directly by poor lifestyle factors such as inadequate diet, obesity, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of exercise, tobacco and alcohol use.
The indirect impacts are even greater. Regardless of the cause of cancer, lifestyle factors will always contribute to the condition worsening or improving. Without addressing the underlying contributors, treatments will certainly be less than ideal.

What you should know: The vast majority of cancer sufferers have no family history.
What you should know: Obesity increases your risk by as much as 40 percent.
What you should know: Don’t wait to get cancer to try to treat it. Prevent it.
The best way to combat cancer is to improve the foods that you eat. The following groupings of foods and nutrients are well known to not only prevent cancer but they have been found to be useful in the treatment of the condition as well.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C enables our bodies to fight cancer naturally. Vitamin C is found in many citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit but can also be found in cantaloupes, mangoes and papayas. Vegetables such as green peppers, broccoli and greens like kale are also good sources of vitamin C.
Vitamin C cannot be stored in the body. Therefore, we need to eat vitamin C every day in our diet.

Green Tea & Cacao

Green tea contains high levels of catechins, which can block the growth of many cancers. For many cancers, there is a direct relationship between the amount of green tea consumed and the reduction in cancer risk. One study suggests that one should consume at least five cups daily.
Cacao is the raw form of chocolate that is rich in highly absorbable antioxidants. Caution – Don’t get too excited and load up on chocolate bars. Most chocolate is loaded with other additives like processed milk products and sugar that have the opposite of cancer-fighting qualities.

Cruciferous Vegetables
Broccoli is one of the best cancer-fighting foods on the planet. They’re loaded with various nutrients that has been found to benefit breast, prostate, skin, colon and rectal cancers.  Sprouts of broccoli have been found to be the most beneficial. A direct cancer-inhibiting nutrient can be found in greater concentrations in the sprouts than the full mature plants. Cabbage and cauliflower have very similar qualities.

Dark, leafy greens
Collards, escarole, kale, mustard greens, romaine lettuce, and Swiss chard are high in carotenoids and antioxidants, which inhibit the growth of certain types of cancers.  These vegetables have incredible levels of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Dark leafy greens are a nutritional powerhouse that should be a regular part of everyone’s diet.

Curcumin & Spices
Found in turmeric, curcumin displays anti-tumor and antioxidant properties. Curcumin is a popular Indian spice that is a member of the ginger family. It’s quite possibly the most powerful anti-cancer spice.
Curcumin has also shown to have both chemo protective and chemo sensitizing properties. This means that it will both enhance the positive cancer-killing effects of conventional chemotherapy, while at the same time it protects healthy cells which may be susceptible to being harmed by chemotherapy.
Garlic – the more you eat, the more you benefit. It contains compounds that activate factors in our cells that control cancer-fighting processes. Other beneficial spices include ginger, dill and parsley.

Carrots & Tomatoes
High in beta carotene, carrots fight many forms of cancer including lung, stomach, intestinal, bladder, prostate, breast, throat and mouth. It’s better to eat them raw rather than cooked and in moderation due to high sugar content.
Tomatoes are one of the anti-cancer super foods that contain lycopene and antioxidants that attack the cancer-causing elements in the body. Lycopene is known to kill cancer cells in the mouth and is linked to reduced risk of breast, prostate, pancreas and colorectal cancers. It is actually more effective if cooked rather than raw.

Avocados
Avocados are perhaps one of the best foods. They are loaded with healthy fats and are high in antioxidants. It is now believed that they may be useful in treating viral hepatitis, which causes liver cancer, as well as other types of liver damage.

Vitamin D & Cancer
Vitamin D acts more like a hormone than a vitamin. Like a hormone, it has a huge impact on how genes express or fail to express themselves. In fact, one in every 25 genes in the human body interacts with vitamin D. This means that deficiencies may weaken the genetic infrastructure of our body and place us at risk for diseases such as cancer.
Without vitamin D our immune system is incapable of producing certain antimicrobial substances, leaving our body unable to fight off bacteria, viruses and cancer. A vitamin D deficiency will prevent the body from killing off precancerous cells before they turn into full-fledged cancer.
According to the Vitamin D Council, the human body needs from 3,000 to 5,000 IU daily. Besides preventing cancer, vitamin D is also needed for strong bones and calcium absorption in the body.
The good news is that vitamin D can also be generated by exposure to the sun. However, if you’re looking to supplement vitamin D, understand not all vitamin D is created equal. Research demonstrates that vitamin D3 is the most powerful form.

Omega-3s & Cancer
Your body can’t produce omega-3s like it can vitamin D. This means that you need to make sure that you are consuming them. Greater intake of omega-3s has been associated with a reduced risk of cancer. The primary way that omega-3s help is the ability to stabilize the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body.
The good news is that omega-3s are in a ton of foods such as beans, certain oils and veggies, and—as you probably know—fish and meat products.

Treatment Versus Prevention
Treatment is expensive and does not address many of the common causes of cancer. Cancer is not caused by a lack of chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. By addressing lifestyle factors you can significantly reduce your chances of developing cancer and ensure optimal results if you’re currently going through treatment.
Prevention offers the most cost-effective and long-term strategy to combat cancer. The solution is not to wait until you get cancer and not to underestimate the powerful effects that nutrition can play in its development. It’s not up to your doctor to treat it; it’s up to you to prevent it.

Astaxanthin: A Rising Star in Alzheimer's Prevention

By Dr. Mercola
In the United States, someone develops Alzheimer's disease every 69 seconds, and by 2050 this is expected to increase to a new case every 33 seconds, according to the Alzheimer's Association's 2011 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures.
The disease is currently at epidemic proportions, with 5.4 million Americans—including one in eight people aged 65 and over—living with Alzheimer's disease.
By 2050, this is expected to jump to 16 million, and in the next 20 years it is projected that Alzheimer's will affect one in four Americans. If that comes to pass, it would then be more prevalent than obesity and diabetes is today!
Alzheimer's is a sad, devastating disease that develops slowly and gets worse over time. Worse yet, there is no known cure and very few treatments. Alzheimer's drugs are often of little to no benefit at all, which underscores the importance of prevention throughout your lifetime.
Alzheimer's develops over the course of a few decades, so the time to start preventing it is yesterday. Your approach to preventing this terrible disease should be a comprehensive lifestyle approach.
I will be discussing the most important aspects of this in a moment, but first, I would like to share new findings about one particular nutritional supplement that has scientists very excited in the battle against Alzheimer's disease.

Astaxanthin is a Rising Star in Alzheimer's Prevention

Astaxanthin is a natural pigment with unique properties and many clinical benefits, including some of the most potent antioxidant activity currently known. It is the same pigment that makes flamingos pink.
These birds are born with grey feathers—and after consuming their natural diet of astaxanthin-containing algae and crustaceans, they turn pink! It has been found to reduce the accumulation of phospholipid hydroperoxidases (PLOOH)—compounds known to accumulate in the red blood cells of people who suffer from dementia—and scientists now believe astaxanthin could help prevent dementia, including Alzheimer's.
As a fat-soluble nutrient, astaxanthin readily crosses your blood-brain barrier. One studyii found it may help prevent neurodegeneration associated with oxidative stress, as well as make a potent natural "brain food."
The molecules of astaxanthin neutralize free radicals and other oxidants without being destroyed or becoming pro-oxidants themselves in the process. It's is a unique molecule whose shape allows it to precisely fit into a cell membrane and span its entire width. In this position, astaxanthin can intercept potentially damaging moleculesbefore they can damage your cells.
In fact, astaxanthin is hundreds of times more effective than vitamin E in squelching singlet oxygen free radicals, and far exceeds the free radical scavenging power of vitamin C, CoQ10, beta-carotene, and green tea. According to a recent article in the Alternative Medicine Review:
"Astaxanthin improved cognition in a small clinical trial and boosted proliferation and differentiation of cultured nerve stem cells…   Astaxanthin's clinical success extends beyond protection against oxidative stress and inflammation, to demonstrable promise for slowing age-related functional decline."
This supports the findings of a prior 2011 study in the British Journal of Nutrition that showed taking 6 mg or 12 mg of astaxanthin daily for 12 weeks lowered levels of PLOOH by 40 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
It is unlikely you will be able to obtain enough astaxanthin from diet alone… unless you are a flamingo. You can get some astaxanthin by taking krill oil, which is a fantastic omega-3 fat supplement. But you can boost your astaxanthin even MORE by adding a pure astaxanthin supplement to your nutritional regimen.  For optimal absorption, make sure to take krill oil and/or astaxanthin with a fat-containing meal, since both are fat-soluble.

"Senior Moments" are NOT a Normal Part of Aging

In spite of how common memory loss is among Westerners, it is NOT a "normal" part of aging. Research has shown that even mild "senior moments" are caused by the same brain lesions associated with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. These cognitive changes are by no means inevitable! People who experience very little decline in their cognitive function up until their deaths have been found (post-mortem) to be free of brain lesions, showing that it's entirely possible to prevent the damage from occurring in the first place.

What Causes Alzheimer's Disease?

In order to effectively prevent a disease, you must address its underlying causative factors. Although we do not have definitive "proof" of what, specifically, causes Alzheimer's, a number of factors have been linked to an increased risk of dementia, and we know enough about those to in turn make educated recommendations for preventing this type of brain deterioration.
The more risk factors you have, the higher your changes are for developing dementia. You may already know I have become passionate about warning of the dangers of fructose. There is NO question in my mind that regularly consuming more than 25 grams of fructose per day will increase your risk of losing your mind.Fructose will catalyze the impact of virtually every other risk factor, like exposure to toxins such as aluminum, or mercury, or even genetic predispositions. It does this by impairing your body's normal self-repair capacity and its ability to recover from these types of assaults.
Following are a number of other factors associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Please note that the first four are related to fructose intake.
Health conditions and drug therapies
  • Obesity, especially increased belly fat, insulin resistance, and diabetes: diabetics have up to 65 percent higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Keep your fasting insulin level below 3 by minimizing sugar and grains and exercising regularly.
  • Elevated uric acid levels: fructose is one of the primary factors that drives up uric acid, which is another reason to avoid excess sugar.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Heart disease and atrial fibrillationiv: If you have "atrial fib," you are 44 percent more likely to develop dementia.
  • Thyroid dysfunction.v
  • Head traumavi: There appears to be a "strong link" between a history of head trauma and Alzheimer's disease, especially if the trauma occurred repeatedly or involved loss of consciousness—so keep your seat belt fastened.
  • Anticholinergic drugs: Drugs that block acetylcholine, a nervous system neurotransmitter, have been shown to increase your risk of dementia. These drugs include certain nighttime pain relievers, antihistamines, sleep aids, certain antidepressants, medications to control incontinence, and certain narcotic pain relievers.
  • One study found that those who took drugs classified as "definite anticholinergics" had a four times higher incidence of cognitive impairment. Regularly taking two of these drugs further increased the risk.
Nutritional deficiencies
  • Vitamin D deficiency: In 2007 researchers at the University of Wisconsin uncovered strong links between low levels of vitamin D in Alzheimer's patients and poor outcomes on cognitive tests. Vitamin D may enhance the levels of important chemicals in your brain that protect your brain cells and combat the brain inflammation seen in dementia patients.
A 2011 study at UCLA found the combination of vitamin D3 and curcumin (the pigment that makes turmeric yellow) to be a highly beneficial combination for Alzheimer's patients.Vitamin D can also fight depression, which is experienced frequently by people with dementia.
  • Vitamin B deficiencies: Elevated homocysteine levels due to vitamin B6, B12 and folate deficiencies; according to a small Finnish study recently published in the Journal Neurology, people who consume foods rich in B12 may reduce their risk of Alzheimer's in their later years.
  • Insufficient omega-3 fats: High intake of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA lowers your risk for Alzheimer's by preventing the associated cell damage. Researchers also report that DHA "dramatically reduces the impact of the Alzheimer's gene."
  • Vitamin E deficiency: A 2008 study showed that Alzheimer's patients who took 2,000 IU of vitamin E daily showed a 26 percent lower mortality rate.
Environmental toxins
  • Aluminum toxicity: avoid antiperspirants, non-stick cookware, and vaccines containing aluminum (and mercury) adjuvants/additives, such as the flu vaccine
  • Mercury toxicity: Avoid fish and seafood, which is usually contaminated with mercury, and avoid dental amalgams, which are probably the largest sources of mercury; implement the mercury detox protocol and utilize a biological dentist if you have dental amalgams
  • Fluoride toxicity: More than 23 different studies indicate even moderate fluoride exposure may have damaging effects on your brain
  • Copper toxicity: Evidence exists that copper can leach out of copper pipes and into tap water, and when consumed over time, can build up in your body. Copper toxicity has been linked to Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and diabetes. You should also avoid vitamin/mineral pills that contain copper and iron, especially if you're over the age of 50
  • Cell phone radiation. Radiation from cell phones and mobile phone handsets may damage areas of your brain associated with learning, memory and movement, and may trigger Alzheimer's disease

Exercise Your Body, Exercise Your Brain

Clearly, the BEST way to "treat" Alzheimer's is to lead a lifestyle that will prevent it in the first place. John J. Ratey, a psychiatrist who wrote the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, says there is overwhelming evidence that regular exercise helps fight dementia and improves mental acuity. Physical exercise may also protect against mild cognitive impairment by:
  • Promoting production of nerve-protecting compounds
  • Increasing blood flow to your brain
  • Improving development and survival of neurons
  • Promoting essential cell and tissue repair mechanisms, including growth of new brain cells
  • Decreasing your risk of heart and blood vessel diseases that can impact brain function
In essence, exercise encourages your brain to work at optimum capacity by causing your nerve cells to multiply, strengthening their interconnections, and protecting them from damage. Exercising your mind daily is as important as exercising your body, so be sure to incorporate some mentally challenging activities into your life, such as playing an instrument, doing puzzles, reading, or other similar activities.

Natural Treatments for Your Anti-Alzheimer's Arsenal

Finally, there are a few other nutritional recommendations worth noting for their specific benefits in preventing and treating dementia. So, although your fundamental strategy for preventing dementia should involve a comprehensive lifestyle approach, you may want to consider adding a few of these natural dietary agents to your anti-Alzheimer's arsenal.
The three natural foods/supplements that have good science behind them, in terms of preventing age-related cognitive changes, are coconut oil, Gingko biloba, and alpha lipoic acid.
  1. Coconut Oil: The primary fuel your brain needs for energy is glucose. However, your brain is able to run on more than a single type of fuel, one being ketones (ketone bodies), or ketoacids. Ketones are what your body produces when it converts fat (as opposed to glucose) into energy.
  2. The medium chain triglycerides (MCT) found in coconut oil are GREAT source of ketone bodies, because coconut oil is about 66 percent MCTs.In fact, ketones appear to be the preferred source of brain food in patients affected by diabetes or Alzheimer's.
  3. Gingko biloba: Many scientific studies have found that Ginkgo biloba has positive effects for dementia. Gingko, which is derived from a tree native to Asia, has long been used medicinally in China and other countries. Fifteen years ago, in one of the first issues of my newsletter, I posted the results of a 1997 study from JAMAx that showed clear evidence that Ginkgo improves cognitive performance and social functioning for those suffering from dementia. Research since then has been equally promising.
One study in 2006 found Gingko as effective as the dementia drug Aricept (donepezil) for treating mild to moderate Alzheimer's type dementia. A 2010 meta-analysisxi found Gingko biloba to be effective for a variety of types of dementia.
  4. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA): ALA can stabilize cognitive functions among Alzheimer's patients and may slow the progression of the disease.
